Authentic Influence Starts Where Reactivity Ends

There’s a moment I see again and again with high-achieving leaders.

From the outside, everything looks successful.
They’re respected. Capable. Trusted.

But internally?

They’re carrying pressure. Reactivity. Mental noise.
And often… they don’t even realize how much it’s shaping their leadership.

Because it feels normal.

The Hidden Cost of “High Functioning”

I recently worked with a senior leader who had been operating in a high-pressure, chaotic environment.

Constant decisions.
Constant urgency.
Constant mental load.

Over time, we didn’t just work on strategy—we worked on her internal state.

And toward the end of our time together, she said something that stopped me:

“I feel calmer and more at peace than I have in five years.”

But what happened next is what matters most.

Once the chaos was gone… she started wondering if she needed a new role.

When Calm Feels Unfamiliar

This is where most people misunderstand what’s happening.

It’s not a career problem.
It’s not a motivation problem.

It’s a nervous system pattern.

When we’ve been operating in chronic stress, the brain becomes conditioned to it.

  • The amygdala (survival center) is driving behavior
  • The body is in a sympathetic (fight-or-flight) state
  • Urgency and pressure feel normal

So when calm finally appears?

It can feel like something is missing.

The Real Shift: From Reaction to Regulation

Here’s what I often teach:

If the reaction carries charge (judgment), there is usually something personal underneath.

That “charge” isn’t just emotional—it’s physiological.

It activates the stress response.
It pulls us out of clear thinking.
It shifts us into reactivity.

And most leaders have been taught to manage the trigger

Instead of getting curious about the charge.

But that’s where the real work is.

What Happens When You Remove the Charge

In our work together, we didn’t just reduce stress.

We addressed the underlying reactions—the judgments, the internal patterns, the meaning-making.

Using tools like self-reflection and self-forgiveness (a practice I learned through my graduate work in spiritual psychology), we begin to unwind the charge at its root.

Not manage it.
Not override it.
But actually release it.

And something powerful happens:

  • The nervous system settles
  • The body shifts back into a parasympathetic (regulated) state
  • The need to “manage” reactions starts to fall away

This is what creates sustainable change.

Not temporary calm.
Not coping strategies.

But a different baseline state.

Back to the Leader

Instead of helping her fill the space with more doing…

We explored a different question:

What if this is the space you’ve been trying to create all along?

And from there, everything shifted.

She stopped chasing the next thing.
She became more present.
More intentional.

And most importantly—

She became a calming force for her team.

That’s Authentic Influence

Authentic influence isn’t about saying the right thing.

It’s not about working harder.
Or leading more forcefully.

It’s about this:

The state you’re in when you lead.

When you’re grounded:

  • You listen differently
  • You respond instead of react
  • People feel safe around you
  • Your presence stabilizes the room

A Simple Place to Start

The next time you feel triggered, pause and ask:

  • What am I reacting to?
  • What feels charged here?
  • What might be underneath this?

Not to fix it.
Just to see it.

Because awareness is the doorway.

And over time, with the right tools, that charge doesn’t just quiet down—

It dissolves.

Final Thought

Most leaders don’t need better strategies.
They need a different internal state while executing them.

That’s where authentic influence begins.
